The Team

Lowell Chang, Dragon KH 10, November 1983.
Lowell Chang
Chairman
He learned to sail in San Francisco. After meeting his wife Phyllis, he settled in Hong Kong and joined the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club in 1972.
His first Dragon was a half share with Christopher Sin, his first boat partner. The Sin family still sails Dragons, and the partnership is now in its second generation.
Chang later served as Rear Commodore, Vice Commodore and Commodore, and was appointed Vice Patron in 2021. He still campaigns his Dragon Davinloong, HKG 46.
Hong Kong’s Dragon fleet is among the oldest outside Europe. By the 1980s the postwar wooden boats were ageing, and the class at home needed new boats.
After racing at the Dragon Worlds in Vancouver, Chang set out to renew the class at home. He acquired a mould from Seattle, worked with naval architects, and from the mid-1980s built Dragons as a craft rather than a commerce, thirty-one boats in all.
The first fibreglass Dragon in Hong Kong, D18, was launched for Phyllis.
In 1987 he and Nick Burns took two Chang Dragons to the Worlds in Geelong. One of them, helmed by Danish Olympic sailor Valdemar Bandolowski, won the world title on its first attempt.
In 1988 he co-founded the Prince Henrik Silver Trophy with His Royal Highness Prince Henrik of Denmark, an interport that still binds the class across continents.
Today he is Honorary Chairman of the 2027 Dragon World Championship, the class’s first Worlds in Asia, and leads the China Dragon Association.
To give China a fleet fit for that championship, he brought Dutch builder Joop Doomernik to work on the first China-built Dragons. That partnership is the origin of Chang & Sin Yacht: boats made to International Dragon class rules, with the same standard he has spent a lifetime insisting on.

Joop Doomernik founded Doomernik Yachts in the Netherlands in 1990 and has spent more than three decades building and refining International Dragons. His yard is recognised for producing hulls of exceptional stiffness and finish within the strict limits of the class rules, combining traditional Dutch craftsmanship with modern materials and close attention to detail.
Doomernik Dragons sail from Europe to Asia, Australia and the United States. Alongside new builds, the yard is known for high-quality restoration work. His guiding principle is simple: “There simply is no substitute for quality. Only perfect is good enough.”
With Chang & Sin Yacht he brings that same standard to the China-built Dragon programme, working on site to ensure every boat meets the performance and finish expected of a true one-design racer.
